EMDR Therapy for Trauma
According to research, an estimated 70% of adults in the U.S have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime, and up to 20% go on to develop posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. This means that if you have experienced trauma, and are struggling to “get over it”, you are not alone.
Trauma is any overwhelming experience – physical, mental or emotional- that challenges your sense of safety and wellbeing in the world. It could have occurred recently or long ago in childhood, and it may have been a one-time event, or an ongoing experience.
Regardless of what it was and how it occurred, if it is still affecting you, it is still relevant.
EMDR Therapy
I utilize a modality called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR for short), which is a powerful and effective way of processing past experiences and reclaiming a sense of wholeness.
This technique is evidence-based and empirically validated in its efficacy. Research has shown a much higher success rate with EMDR for reduction or alleviation of symptoms after a traumatic event, than with talk-therapy alone. My clients have found it to be a powerful way for people to integrate unprocessed experiences, or parts of themselves that may be fragmented or feel stuck in the past, and begin to access a truer sense of who they are- someone that is whole, resilient, and capable of so much!
